Soudanese soldiers were incorporated into the British Army in the late 1880s and brought to Kenya in the early 1900s. They served for the British Army in the King's African Rifles during World War I and World War II. After their service, they were demobilized without pensions, payments or benefits, but they were given the land of Kibera to permanently settle on as an alternative for not being able to return to Sudan. A woman holds a photo of her grandfather who served in the King's African Rifles.
